Tongue side braces are truly invisible - nothing shows at all. They are basically train-track braces stuck to the tongue side of the teeth instead of the lip side.
From a patient’s perspective the main advantage is obviously cosmetic, but they are also more clinically effective than invisible braces when it comes to straightening moderate to severely crooked teeth. Invisible braces are not so good, say, at “curtain-railing” crowded front teeth around to use up extraction spaces at the back of the mouth. If you need to have teeth taken out to fix your problem this is the brace for you.
The pay off for having a brace which doesn’t show is that it takes two weeks to get used to the feel of the brace against the tongue. We provide special waxes and fast-setting silicone resins to put on top of the brackets which help in the short term. Patients might find their speech is slightly different for the first few days. After the first two week adaptation stage patients just forget they’re wearing braces.
Lingual (Tongue Side) Braces
(Also known as concealed braces).
Dr Nicky has invested in further postgraduate training to give her patients more choices, as not many orthodontists have experience in lingual orthodontics. Each set of brackets is customised to fit individual patients using a special laboratory technique. The brackets are smaller and fiddlier than regular braces and they are more difficult to adjust. Each appointment takes about 30 minutes, as opposed to 15 minutes with regular train track braces. The exclusive nature of lingual braces, the increased chairside time and laboratory costs accounts for why lingual orthodontic treatment costs a bit more than conventional train-track braces. Sometimes people opt for combi treatment - lingual upper braces and tooth-coloured lower train track braces to reduce the overall cost of treatment
