In the old days dentists used removable appliances to straighten teeth, as fixed appliance technology was just not available. They are more limited in how they can move teeth, however, there are some things that train track braces just cannot do - we still use removable appliances as an adjunct to more hi-tech treatment.

 

Nowadays removable appliances can be all different colours, and you can even embed your own paper picture in the middle of the plastic.

People often ask if they can wear the sort of brace which straightens teeth by wearing it just in bed at night. Unfortunately there is no brace which can do this. If we just move teeth at night and then let go of them, they drift back to where they started from during the day. All braces which move teeth need to be worn the majority of the time.

 

There are braces which people wear just in bed at night, called retainers, which just hold the teeth straight. They don’t move teeth. Everyone gets retainers when braces come off. Dr Nicky uses clear plastic retainers which are like thin see-through gumshields.
